April's Guest Speaker: Leonard Wilkenson

Leonard Wilkenson was the guest speaker at our April meeting.

He offered lots of great tips and advice about framing your work.

Leonard even provided a hands-on mat cutting demonstration and sveral people were able to cut custom mats for pieces they brought to the meeting.

At our January meeting Nancy Sharp brought telephone wire and showed us how to create wire figures.

Everyone had fun making these little figures- but they were difficult to photograph. At the bottom are my two placed on my cutting mat.

At our december gathering we had a hands-on papermaking demonstration. Nancy and Doris are shown here making sheets of paper from re-cyled junk mail. This was a fun day and a demo we will repeat in the Spring.

I'll be back in the studio soon, my recent absence has been due

to the loss of my brother.

Linwood "Rock" Phillips passed away on August 5th.

Today would have been his 59th Birthday.

I can't walk down High Street in Millville without being reminded of Rock.

I want to share with you here the very nice column that appeared in the

Bridgeton Evening News, written by Rock's good friend Bernie Heller.

"Millville lost another legendary former business leader last night, as Rock Phillips passed away at his home in North Carolina.

"Some folks may not recall, but it was Rock who brought the Holly City the original Incredible Bulk" (located at High & Mulberry streets) as well as Rock & Robins (Now N.Y. Style Pizza).
"A serial entrepreneur, upon retiring from his role as a police officer (working with Baltimore's K-9 division and then the Linwood Police Department), Rock was never content to stand still.

"He saw and/or created opportunities where others could/would not and as a result created and developed several successful businesses over the span of 20 years.

"He was actively involved in the then-Millville Business & Professional Association and served for a short time as the Executive Director of the Millville Chamber of Commerce, eventually working to merge the two organizations.

"Upon retiring for a second time from retail, Rock and his family moved to rural North Carolina where once again his entrepreneurial vision would lead him as he converted a former school house into a prosperous self-storage company.

"Unassuming but ever confident, Rock was a friend to many and a mentor to a few ... including, quite thankfully, me.

He was a loving father. husband and friend, but truly excelled in the role of grandfather.

"He was quick to laugh, always willing to assist someone in need, and for those who were lucky enough to have known him will be missed forever.

Third Friday at the Consortium this month was lots of fun!

George Perez is our Featured Artist.

We had lots of people come through and George delighted the crowd by singing many old favorites- songs by Sinatra, Elvis and my favorite "Somewhere" by Bobby Darin.

Isabel and Elizabeth joined in on "That's Why The Lady Is A Tramp."

January Meeting & Press Coverage

The Challenge: Everyone was asked to bring a post card to the December meeting. All the cards were put into a bag and each person drew a card randomly. The challenge was to create something in any medium, using the post card as inspiration and/or incorporating it into the piece.
As usual, we were treated to an amazing array of really unique and creative work. I apologize for the poor quality of some of the shots that follow. It was a very hectic meeting with Daily Journal reporter Joel Landau there with photographer Cody Glenn. Saturday was the Summerfest & Chili Cook Off in Millville. 3 tents were set up, artists came and painted and fliers were handed out advertising the next meeting of JUMP IN!

Getting Started

On Wednesday, June 24th we had the first meeting of our new Millville group "JUMP IN!"
15 Artists attended and things got off to a great start with Sue Rau leading a discussion of "surviving as an Artist in the current economy."

Our first challenge is to create something inspired by CIRCLES and bring it in to the next meeting to share.

We discussed setting up tents at the Millville Summerfest and decided to give it a try. Our first meeting and our first event!
